How long have humans mourned our lack of wings? Did our caveman ancestors look wistfully at the avians of old and dream of joining them?

It was Leonardo da Vinci that made some of the first renowned efforts to fly with the birds. Inspired by their flapping, he tailored his flying machine to follow suit. It didn't work all too well.

But in the early 20th century, we broke the bonds of gravity. The question then changed from whether we will take to the skies to how we will do it. Since then, we've come up with a great many imaginative ways.
